What this site collects, what it does not, and who else your browser talks to

BC Fishing Weather (bcfishingweather.ca) is a free marine weather and tide reference for British Columbia coastal waters. This page explains what happens to data when you visit, in plain terms.
There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no newsletters and no contact forms on this site. We do not ask you for your name, email address, phone number or payment details, and we have no database of visitors. The only way to reach us is the email address in the footer, which you choose to use.
This site carries advertising from Google AdSense, which is how it stays free. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads and, where permitted, to personalise them based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
Third-party vendors other than Google may also serve ads here through Google's network, and set their own cookies. We do not control those cookies and cannot read them.
We use Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages and locations get used, so we know where to spend effort. It sets cookies and records a truncated IP address, page URLs and general device information. We look at this only in aggregate; it is not used to identify individuals. Google's Privacy Policy covers how they handle it, and the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on blocks it entirely.
Some links and the rotating product panel are Amazon Associates affiliate links. If you buy something after following one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Following the link takes you to Amazon, whose own privacy policy then applies. Affiliate links never change the weather, tide or forecast data shown on this site.
The Locate button asks your browser for your position. It is never requested automatically - only when you tap it, and your browser will ask permission first.
Your coordinates stay in your browser. They are used to pick the nearest of our coastal locations, drop a marker and centre the map. They are not sent to our server, not stored, not logged, and not shared with anyone. Declining the permission leaves every other part of the site working normally.
This site stores one item in your browser's local storage: your list of favourite
locations, under the key bcFishingFavorites. It stays on your device, is
readable only by this site, and is never transmitted to us. Clearing your browser
data removes it. Advertising and analytics cookies described above are set separately
by Google.
Map tiles, forecasts and tide predictions are loaded directly by your browser from the organisations that publish them, so those services necessarily see your IP address and the request. We do not send them anything else about you.
Our web host records standard access logs - IP address, timestamp, requested URL, referrer and user agent - as every web server does. These are used for security and troubleshooting, are not combined with advertising or analytics data, and are not sold or shared.
If you are visiting from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, a consent banner asks before any advertising or analytics cookie is set. You can accept, refuse, or choose purposes individually under "Manage options", and your choice is remembered on later visits. Refusing means you still see ads, but non-personalised ones. You can change your answer at any time, and you can also control these cookies yourself:
Blocking any of it leaves the site fully usable - the maps, forecasts and tide charts do not depend on advertising or analytics.
Under the GDPR and UK GDPR you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data held about you. We hold none ourselves: there are no accounts and no visitor database here, and the advertising and analytics data described above sits with Google, not with us. Write to info@bcfishingweather.ca and we will point you to the relevant Google control.
This site is aimed at adult anglers and boaters. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted here with a new date at the top. Material changes will be reflected before they take effect.
Questions about this policy can go to info@bcfishingweather.ca.
