The sound holds resident winter chinook, which is the core of the local fishery through the colder months. Summer brings migratory chinook, and coho move through later in the season. The Squamish River system at the head supports autumn returns. Prawn and crab are taken in the sound, subject to seasonal openings and area closures.

Four salmon closure areas are in effect today, including Mannion Bay (Deep Bay), Point Atkinson and Porteau Cove and others. A closure overrides the area-wide limit where they overlap.
