This area is best known for its winter chinook fishery, when resident fish hold on the nearby banks through the colder months - a genuine year-round fishery rather than a summer-only one. Larger migratory chinook move through in summer, and coho appear later in the season. The combination gives Victoria a longer productive season than most of the south coast.

Four salmon closure areas are in effect today, including Christmas Point, Esquimalt Harbour and Ogden Point and others. A closure overrides the area-wide limit where they overlap.
