📊 Historical Data
Gibsons fishing & marine conditions
Gibsons sits on the north-western side of the entrance to Howe Sound, at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast. It faces across the mouth of the sound toward Bowen Island, and sits at the junction between Howe Sound and the Strait of Georgia, so it is exposed to weather from both.
What runs here, and when
The waters around the mouth of Howe Sound hold resident winter chinook through the colder months, with migratory chinook in summer and coho later in the season. Prawn and crab are taken in the surrounding water, subject to seasonal openings and closures.
Local hazards
This is where Howe Sound outflow winds meet the Strait of Georgia, and the corner can be rough when a northerly is draining down the sound. Ferry traffic between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale crosses the entrance frequently. The exposure to Georgia Strait means a south-easterly builds a substantial sea from the opposite direction.
Tides, current and sea state
Sitting at a junction, this area can be affected by conditions in either Howe Sound or the Strait of Georgia, and the two often differ. Check both forecasts. Tidal currents around the entrance are moderate compared with the narrows further east, but wind against tide at the mouth of the sound still produces a short, steep chop.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 49.395°N, 123.506°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 07820. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Gibsons lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.
No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
Regulations
Gibsons lies in DFO Pacific Area 28. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 28 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of November 1, 2026, seven closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 28, among them Night closure area, Point Atkinson and Porteau Cove.
