Sechelt fishing & marine conditions
The Sechelt area tide station sits at Porpoise Bay on Sechelt Inlet, the sheltered fjord behind the isthmus that separates it from the Strait of Georgia. Because the inlet fills through a single narrow rapid, its tidal behaviour lags and differs from the open coast a short distance away.
What runs here, and when
Sechelt Inlet is known for prawns, taken subject to seasonal openings and area closures. Chinook and coho move along the outer coast in season, with summer and autumn the respective peaks. The inlet's sheltered, deep water gives it a different seasonal character from the exposed strait outside.
Local hazards
Skookumchuck Narrows controls entry to the inlet and runs at extreme speed away from slack, with standing waves and whirlpools that are dangerous to any small vessel. It is one of the fastest tidal rapids in the world and must be transited at slack water. Outflow winds can funnel down the inlet from the mountains at its head.
Tides, current and sea state
Because the whole inlet drains and fills through the Skookumchuck, high and low water inside are delayed relative to the outside coast and the range is modified. That lag is the reason current predictions for the rapids are essential - the slack there does not align with tide times on the Georgia Strait side.

Tidal currents
Fishing Sechelt is timed by the current, not the tide height. The pass that governs it is Sechelt Rapids.
Sechelt Rapids floods to the southeast and ebbs to the northwest, running to 13.4 knots. Slack on September 17: 07:11, 15:04, 18:17, 22:42.
Predictions for the pass itself, not the water around it. Slack shifts about 50 minutes later each day, so these times are wrong for any other date. The Tidal Currents panel above gives every turn with its maximum-flow speed; CHS is the source.

Sechelt lies in DFO Pacific Area 16. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 16 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of September 17, 2026, three closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 16, Gunboat Bay, Pender Harbour Recreational Crab Gear Restriction Area and Coastwide. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 2 per day; coho 2 per day in 16-1 to 16-4 and 16-6 to 16-22, 4 per day in 16-5; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.
