📊 Historical Data

Saltspring Island South fishing & marine conditions

The southern end of Saltspring Island faces Satellite Channel and the approaches to Saanich Inlet, with Sansum Narrows running up its western side. It is well sheltered from ocean swell and sits at a junction of several channels, so conditions vary noticeably around the island depending on which side you are on.

What runs here, and when

Chinook hold in the surrounding channels through much of the year, including resident winter fish, and migratory fish move through in summer. Coho arrive later in the season. The mix of deep channel and shallower bay habitat within a short distance supports a longer season than more exposed water.

Local hazards

Sansum Narrows on the west side carries strong currents and funnelled wind. Ferry traffic serves the island at several terminals and crosses the surrounding channels frequently. Reefs and drying rocks line parts of the shoreline. The channels can develop a short, steep chop when wind opposes the tidal stream.

Tides, current and sea state

The channels around southern Saltspring move a fair volume of water and the current sets differ markedly between the east and west sides of the island. Back-eddies along the shore run opposite to the main stream in places. Plan transits of Sansum Narrows around the current rather than the clock.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 48.820°N, 123.450°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Saltspring Island South lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.

No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Saltspring Island South lies in DFO Pacific Area 18. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 18 recreational fishing page before you go.
