📊 Historical Data

Sansum Narrows fishing & marine conditions

Sansum Narrows is the steep-walled channel separating Saltspring Island from Vancouver Island, connecting Satellite Channel in the south with Stuart Channel to the north. It is deep, narrow and hemmed in by high ground on both sides, and it is one of the more distinctive pieces of water in the southern Gulf Islands.

What runs here, and when

The narrows hold chinook through much of the year, including resident winter fish, and the constricted geometry concentrates both bait and fish. Coho move through later in the season. The reliable current is what makes the fishing here consistent - it keeps bait moving through a confined space rather than letting it scatter.

Local hazards

Two things define the narrows. First, the tidal current: it runs hard through the constriction, sets up eddies and back-currents along the walls, and can make boat handling difficult for anything underpowered. Second, the wind, which funnels along the channel between the high ground on either side and can be markedly stronger inside the narrows than at either end. The combination of a strong current against a funnelled wind produces a short, steep chop in a confined space with limited room to manoeuvre.

Tides, current and sea state

Plan transits and fishing around the current rather than the clock. The high ground shades the channel early and late in the day, and the wind behaviour is genuinely local - a forecast for the wider Gulf Islands is a poor predictor of what the narrows will do. Watch for the back-eddies close to the walls, which can run opposite to the main stream.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 48.820°N, 123.600°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Sansum Narrows lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.

No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Sansum Narrows lies in DFO Pacific Area 18. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 18 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, five closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 18, among them Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW) Recreational Salmon Fishing Closure, Pender Island Vessel Restricted Zone and Saturna Island Vessel Restricted Zone. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 2 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.

Read from the DFO Area 18 page, last updated 2026-11-01. See the full Area 18 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
