Sidney fishing & marine conditions
Sidney lies on the east side of the Saanich Peninsula, facing the southern Gulf Islands across a channel scattered with islands, reefs and shoals. It is well sheltered compared with the outer coast, and serves as a natural jumping-off point for the islands to the north and east.
What runs here, and when
Chinook are present through much of the year, with winter fish on the nearby banks and summer migrants moving through the channels. Coho arrive later in the season. Crab is popular in the shallower sheltered water, subject to seasonal openings and area closures.
Local hazards
The approaches are shallow and studded with reefs and drying rocks, several of which are poorly marked at high water - this is chart-and-eyes water rather than GPS-only water. Ferry traffic runs to and from the nearby terminal on a frequent schedule. Currents run strongly through the gaps between the islands.
Tides, current and sea state
Tidal streams accelerate between the islands and can run against a light breeze to produce a short, awkward chop out of proportion to the wind. Height predictions at Sidney are a reasonable guide for the immediate area, but current timing in the passes between the islands is a separate question and should be planned from current tables. The Saanich Peninsula sits between two tidal regimes, and the water on its east side behaves differently from Saanich Inlet on the west, despite the short distance across the land.

As of September 17, 2026, seven closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 19, among them Ogden Point, Esquimalt Harbour and Christmas Point. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day in 19-1, 19-3 and 19-4, closed in 19-2, 2 per day in 19-5 to 19-11, non retention in 19-12; chum 2 per day; coho 2 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.
