Beecher Bay to Trial Islands fishing & marine conditions

This section links the eastern entrance of Juan de Fuca Strait with the approaches to Victoria, and packs a lot of structure into a short distance: headlands, reefs and steep drop-offs close to shore. It sits on the boundary between the open strait and the sheltered water around Victoria, and conditions can change markedly over just a few miles.

What runs here, and when

Chinook are present through much of the year in this area, with winter fish holding on the nearby banks and larger summer fish moving through on migration. Coho show later in the season. The mix of resident winter fish and summer migrants means this water fishes across more of the calendar than most of the strait.

Local hazards

The tide rips off the Trial Islands and through Race Passage are the serious local hazard - the currents are strong, and on a large exchange the water stands up into steep, breaking seas that are genuinely dangerous for small boats. Race Rocks nearby is both a current hazard and a protected area with its own restrictions. Add a westerly against an ebb and this becomes water to avoid rather than manage.

Tides, current and sea state

Currents here are among the strongest in the region and they run hard on big tidal exchanges. Time transits for slack water or for a fair current, and check the exchange size, not just the direction - a modest tide and a large one produce completely different conditions in the same passage. The rips hold bait and fish, which is precisely why boats push their luck here.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 48.380°N, 123.520°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Beecher Bay to Trial Islands lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Juan de Fuca Strait marine forecast zone.

⚠ Strong wind warning in effect for Juan de Fuca Strait - west entrance, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Tidal currents

Fishing Beecher Bay to Trial Islands is timed by the current, not the tide height. The pass that governs it is Race Passage.

Race Passage floods to the northeast and ebbs to the southwest, running to 6.5 knots. Slack on November 1: 03:51, 11:05.

Predictions for the pass itself, not the water around it. Slack shifts about 50 minutes later each day, so these times are wrong for any other date. The Tidal Currents panel above gives every turn with its maximum-flow speed; CHS is the source.
