📊 Historical Data
Victoria Harbour fishing & marine conditions
The Victoria Harbour tide station sits at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, where Juan de Fuca Strait meets Haro Strait. Its tidal pattern is a useful reference for the whole southern tip of the Island, though currents in the nearby passes behave very differently from the height curve at the station itself.
What runs here, and when
Nearby waters hold winter chinook on the local banks through the colder months and see migratory chinook and coho passing in summer and autumn. Crab and prawn are taken in the sheltered water around the peninsula, subject to the seasonal openings and closures that change through the year.
Local hazards
The tide rips off the Trial Islands, just east of the harbour, are the local hazard to plan around, and they are worst on large exchanges. Harbour traffic includes ferries, commercial vessels and float planes operating from the water surface. Fog affects the approaches through the summer months.
Tides, current and sea state
Southern Vancouver Island has a complex tidal signature, with a marked difference between successive high and low waters on many days. That mixed pattern means the largest daily exchange can fall at an awkward hour, so read the full day rather than assuming a regular six-hour rhythm. Current timing in the nearby passes does not coincide with high and low water at the station.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 48.423°N, 123.370°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 07120. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Victoria Harbour lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Juan de Fuca Strait marine forecast zone.
⚠ Strong wind warning in effect for Juan de Fuca Strait - west entrance, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
Tidal currents
Fishing Victoria Harbour is timed by the current, not the tide height. The pass that governs it is Race Passage.
Race Passage floods to the northeast and ebbs to the southwest, running to 6.5 knots. Slack on November 1: 03:51, 11:05.
Predictions for the pass itself, not the water around it. Slack shifts about 50 minutes later each day, so these times are wrong for any other date. The Tidal Currents panel above gives every turn with its maximum-flow speed; CHS is the source.
Regulations
Victoria Harbour lies in DFO Pacific Area 19. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 19 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of November 1, 2026, seven closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 19, among them Ogden Point, Esquimalt Harbour and Christmas Point. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day in 19-1, 19-3 and 19-4, closed in 19-2, 2 per day in 19-5 to 19-11, non retention in 19-12; chum 4 per day; coho 2 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.
Read from the DFO Area 19 page, last updated 2026-11-01. See the full Area 19 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
