📊 Historical Data

Discovery Island to D'Arcy Island fishing & marine conditions

This stretch runs north-east from Victoria along the edge of Haro Strait, past a chain of small islands and reefs on the boundary between Canadian and American waters. It is more exposed than the Gulf Islands proper but better sheltered than Juan de Fuca Strait, with a great deal of tidal structure packed into a small area.

What runs here, and when

Chinook use this corridor both as winter residents on the local banks and as summer migrants moving through toward the Fraser. Coho pass later in the season. The islands and reefs concentrate bait, so the fishing tends to be tied to structure and tide rather than spread evenly across the area.

Local hazards

Currents run hard through the passes between the islands and set up rips that stand up sharply against wind. The international boundary runs through this water, and licensing and regulations differ on the American side - know which side you are on. Reefs and drying rocks are numerous and not all are obvious at high water. Ferry and freighter traffic transits Haro Strait.

Tides, current and sea state

Haro Strait carries a large volume of tidal exchange, and the streams here are strong enough to dominate boat handling near the islands. Plan around slack water for the passes. Because the tide sets across the boundary, a drift while fishing can carry you further than intended in either direction.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 48.420°N, 123.220°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Discovery Island to D'Arcy Island lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Haro Strait marine forecast zone.

No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
