📊 Historical Data

Gabriola & Valdez Islands fishing & marine conditions

Gabriola and Valdes Islands form the outer edge of the Gulf Islands facing the Strait of Georgia, with the passes between them connecting the sheltered island channels to the open strait. The exposed north-eastern shores face a long fetch across Georgia Strait, while the inner sides stay comparatively sheltered.

What runs here, and when

Chinook move along these shores on migration and resident winter fish hold on the nearby banks and reefs. Coho appear later in the season. The islands sit on a natural migration route between the strait and the inner channels, so the fishing tends to follow the movement of fish through the passes.

Local hazards

Gabriola Pass and Porlier Pass both run hard and contain rocks and reefs; both should be transited at or near slack water. The north-east side of Gabriola is exposed to the full fetch of Georgia Strait, and a strong south-easterly builds a substantial sea there. Thrasher Rock and the reefs off the eastern end are hazards to navigation.

Tides, current and sea state

The passes between the islands concentrate tidal flow and produce strong currents with overfalls on large exchanges. Conditions differ sharply between the sheltered inner channels and the exposed strait side, sometimes within a mile or two. Check the Georgia Strait forecast for the outer shore and treat the inner channels as a separate problem.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 49.150°N, 123.720°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Gabriola & Valdez Islands lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.

No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Tidal currents

Fishing Gabriola & Valdez Islands is timed by the current, not the tide height. The passes that govern it are Gabriola Passage and Porlier Pass.

Gabriola Passage floods to the east and ebbs to the west, running to 7.5 knots. Slack on November 1: 02:59, 10:15, 17:21, 21:17.

Porlier Pass floods to the north-northeast and ebbs to the south-southwest, running to 9.5 knots. Slack on November 1: 03:14, 10:54, 17:32, 21:57.

Predictions for the pass itself, not the water around it. Slack shifts about 50 minutes later each day, so these times are wrong for any other date. The Tidal Currents panel above gives every turn with its maximum-flow speed; CHS is the source.

Regulations

Gabriola & Valdez Islands lies in DFO Pacific Area 17. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 17 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, three closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 17, Neck Point and Horswell Bluff, Cedar Bridge and Coastwide. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 2 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.
