Nanaimo fishing & marine conditions
The Nanaimo Harbour tide station sits behind Newcastle and Protection Islands on the east coast of Vancouver Island, in sheltered water at the western edge of the Strait of Georgia. Its predictions are the standard reference for the central island coast between the Gulf Islands and Georgia Strait.
What runs here, and when
Local waters hold winter chinook on the nearby banks through the colder months, with migratory chinook in summer and coho later in the season. The Nanaimo River supports autumn returns including chum. Crab and prawn are taken in the sheltered water, subject to seasonal openings.
Local hazards
Dodd Narrows, south of the harbour, is the significant nearby hazard: a very narrow passage where the tidal stream runs at several knots and standing waves and whirlpools form away from slack water. The Nanoose military exercise area to the north closes to traffic when active. Ferry traffic in Departure Bay is heavy.
Tides, current and sea state
Nanaimo is a widely used reference station, and the height predictions here apply reasonably across the sheltered central island coast. Current timing in Dodd Narrows and the Gulf Island passes is a separate matter and must come from current tables - slack water in the narrows does not coincide with high or low water at the harbour.

Tidal currents
Fishing Nanaimo is timed by the current, not the tide height. The pass that governs it is Dodd Narrows.
Dodd Narrows floods to the north and ebbs to the south-southeast, running to 7.7 knots. Slack on September 17: 02:29, 09:41, 15:33, 20:30.
Predictions for the pass itself, not the water around it. Slack shifts about 50 minutes later each day, so these times are wrong for any other date. The Tidal Currents panel above gives every turn with its maximum-flow speed; CHS is the source.

Nanaimo lies in DFO Pacific Area 17. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 17 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of September 17, 2026, five closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 17, among them Neck Point and Horswell Bluff, Chemainus River and Departure Bay Finfish Closure. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day in 17-1 to 17-4, 17-8, 17-10 to 17-12 and 17-21, non retention in 17-5 to 17-7, 17-9 and 17-13 to 17-20; chum 2 per day; coho 2 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.
