📊 Historical Data
Point Roberts fishing & marine conditions
Point Roberts is the tip of a peninsula hanging below the 49th parallel, geographically attached to the mainland but politically part of the United States, at the southern edge of the Fraser approaches. The surrounding water sits on the main migration route into the Fraser River.
What runs here, and when
The waters off the point sit squarely on the Fraser migration route. Sockeye pass in summer with the largest returns on cycle years, pinks run in odd-numbered years, and chinook and coho move through in season, with chum late. Timing here is driven by river returns rather than by resident fish.
Local hazards
The international boundary runs immediately north of the point, and it is easy to cross inadvertently while fishing or drifting - licensing, limits and regulations differ on each side and are enforced. Shallow banks extend off the point. Commercial traffic uses the nearby shipping lanes into the Fraser and Vancouver.
Tides, current and sea state
The tidal streams here are influenced by the enormous outflow of the Fraser as well as by the tide, and the freshwater layer can sit on the surface well offshore during freshet. That layering affects both water clarity and where fish hold. Wind against an ebb near the river approaches builds a short, steep sea.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 48.988°N, 123.078°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 07590. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Point Roberts lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.
No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
