📊 Historical Data

Tsawwassen fishing & marine conditions

Tsawwassen sits on the southern edge of the Fraser delta, where a long causeway runs out across Roberts Bank to the ferry terminal and coal port. The surrounding water is shallow over the bank, with deeper water beyond, and the area sits directly on the Fraser approach route.

What runs here, and when

This is Fraser approach water. Sockeye move through in summer with the biggest returns on cycle years, pinks in odd-numbered years, chinook and coho through the season, and chum in autumn. Crab is taken over the bank, subject to seasonal openings and closures.

Local hazards

Ferry and commercial traffic is heavy and concentrated: the terminal handles frequent large vehicle ferries and the coal port takes deep-sea bulk carriers, all using defined approaches that must be kept clear. Roberts Bank is shallow over a wide area and grounding on an ebb is a real risk. Wind over the shallow bank builds a steep chop quickly.

Tides, current and sea state

Roberts Bank is broad and shallow, so the state of the tide governs where a boat can go. The Fraser outflow puts a freshwater layer over the salt through freshet, affecting clarity and fish behaviour. Tide against a westerly over the bank is the condition that produces uncomfortable water here.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 49.006°N, 123.129°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 07590. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Tsawwassen lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.

No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Tsawwassen lies in DFO Pacific Area 29. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 29 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, five closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 29, among them Tidal portion of the Fraser River (in Area 29), Tidal Portion of Fraser River (Area 29) and Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and Delta Port. Salmon limits for the area: in 29-1 to 29-5 and 29-8, chinook 2 per day, pink 4 per day, sockeye non retention; in 29-6, 29-7 and 29-9 to 29-17, all salmon closed; in 29-1 to 29-14 and 29-17, chum 4 per day; in 29-15 and 29-16, all salmon closed; in 29-1 to 29-10 and 29-12, coho 2 per day; in 29-11, 29-13, 29-14 and 29-17, coho 2 per day.

Read from the DFO Area 29 page, last updated 2026-10-31. See the full Area 29 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
