White Rock fishing & marine conditions
White Rock lies on the northern shore of Semiahmoo Bay, at the south-eastern corner of the Strait of Georgia near the international boundary. Like the rest of Boundary Bay it is shallow with a wide intertidal zone, and the pier and beach dominate the local shoreline.
What runs here, and when
Crab is the mainstay of the local fishery, subject to seasonal openings and area closures. Salmon pass through the wider Fraser approaches in season - sockeye in summer on cycle years, pinks in odd-numbered years, and chum in autumn - though the fishing generally happens further offshore than the immediate beach.
Local hazards
Shallow water and extensive drying flats are the main hazard, and grounding on a falling tide is the usual problem. The international boundary is close by, and licensing and regulations differ on the American side. Wind against a shallow bottom builds an awkward chop out of proportion to its strength. Shellfish closures apply in places on health grounds.
Tides, current and sea state
The large tidal range over shallow ground is the controlling factor. Plan launches and returns around the state of the tide, not the clock. The bay warms noticeably on a summer flood as water moves across the sun-warmed flats. The shallow bottom means wind-driven chop develops and dies away quickly, so conditions can change substantially within an hour.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 49.025°N, 122.803°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 07577. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
White Rock lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.
No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
Regulations
White Rock lies in DFO Pacific Area 29. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 29 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
