📊 Historical Data

Bamfield fishing & marine conditions

Bamfield sits on the eastern side of the entrance to Barkley Sound, a small community split across an inlet on the exposed west coast of Vancouver Island. It is sheltered within the inlet, with open Pacific and the offshore banks a short distance out.

What runs here, and when

Chinook and coho move along the coast and past the sound entrance in summer and autumn. Halibut are taken on the offshore banks. The sheltered water inside the sound holds prawns, subject to seasonal openings and area closures.

Local hazards

The open coast outside is exposed to full Pacific swell with no shelter offshore, and Cape Beale nearby is a notably exposed headland where swell and wind concentrate. Fog is frequent in summer. Access to the community is limited, and services are fewer than at the larger west-coast ports.

Tides, current and sea state

Swell governs the outer water and is largely independent of local wind, so a calm day can still be unworkable offshore. Tidal range is larger here than on the inside coast. Inside the sound and among the islands, conditions moderate substantially and the tide matters more for navigating shallow passages. The inlet is deep and steep-sided, and wind funnels along it, so the sheltered feel of the community can be misleading on a windy day.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 48.836°N, 125.136°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 08545. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Bamfield lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's West Coast Vancouver Island South marine forecast zone.

⚠ Gale warning in effect for West Coast Vancouver Island South, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Bamfield lies in DFO Pacific Area 23. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 23 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
