Ucluelet fishing & marine conditions
Ucluelet sits at the entrance to Barkley Sound on the exposed west coast of Vancouver Island, with the harbour tucked inside the entrance and open Pacific immediately outside. It is a working fishing port and one of the main west-coast bases, with offshore banks within reach.
What runs here, and when
Chinook and coho are the main species through summer and into autumn, with fish moving along the coast and staging off the entrance. Halibut are taken on the offshore banks, and the deeper ground holds bottom fish. The Somass sockeye return into Alberni Inlet is the major summer event in the adjoining inside water.

Local hazards
Pacific swell is the dominant hazard and it is present regardless of local wind. The harbour entrance and the nearby banks steepen the swell, and an ebb running against it makes conditions markedly worse. Fog is frequent in summer. Once offshore there is no shelter, and weather can deteriorate faster than a small boat can return.
Tides, current and sea state
Read the swell forecast as carefully as the wind forecast - swell period matters as much as height, since a long-period swell breaks heavily over shallow ground. Time the entrance around the tide where possible, avoiding a large ebb against a big swell. Inside the sound conditions moderate quickly, but that shelter is a poor guide to what is happening outside.

As of September 17, 2026, 16 closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 23, among them Pacific Rim National Park, Coeur d'Alene Creek and Effingham Inlet West. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum non retention in 23, 2 per day in 123; coho 4 per day in 23-1 to 23-3, 2 per day in 23-4 to 23-11, 2 per day in 123; pink non retention in 23, 4 per day in 123; sockeye 4 per day in 23, non retention in 123.
