📊 Historical Data
Tofino fishing & marine conditions
The Tofino tide station sits on the exposed west coast of Vancouver Island and is the standard tidal reference for this stretch of open coast. Its predictions cover water that is genuinely oceanic, with a larger tidal range than the sheltered inside waters on the other side of the island.
What runs here, and when
Chinook and coho move along this coast in summer and autumn, with halibut on the offshore banks. Local inlets draw returns to their own systems later in the season. The fishery here is shaped by ocean conditions to a degree that inside-water fisheries are not.
Local hazards
The harbour entrance bar breaks in a large swell, and an ebb against that swell makes it considerably more dangerous. Fog is frequent in summer. Extensive drying mudflats inside the sound mean the tide controls navigation, and grounding on a falling tide is a common local problem. Sandbars inside the sound shift over time, so older local knowledge of a channel is not a substitute for a current chart.
Tides, current and sea state
The west coast sees a larger tidal range than the sheltered inside waters, and that range drives both the bar conditions and access to the shallow inside channels. Combine the tide table with the swell forecast: the two together, not either alone, determine whether the entrance is workable.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 49.153°N, 125.907°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 08615. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Tofino lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's West Coast Vancouver Island South marine forecast zone.
⚠ Gale warning in effect for West Coast Vancouver Island South, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
Regulations
Tofino lies in DFO Pacific Area 24. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 24 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of November 1, 2026, three closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 24, Pacific Rim National Park, Kennedy Cove and Coastwide. Salmon limits for the area: in 24, 124, chinook 2 per day; in 24, chum non retention, coho 2 per day, pink non retention, sockeye 4 per day; in 124, chum 4 per day, coho 2 per day, pink 4 per day, sockeye non retention.
