Barkley Sound fishing & marine conditions
Barkley Sound is a large, island-studded sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, opening to the open Pacific and running inland to Alberni Inlet. The Broken Group Islands fill its centre, giving sheltered water among the islands with fully exposed ocean at the entrance. It is a genuine west-coast fishery with inside water attached.
What runs here, and when
Chinook and coho are the main summer and autumn species, with fish staging off the entrance before moving inland. The Somass system at the head of Alberni Inlet draws a substantial summer sockeye return, which is the defining seasonal event for the inlet. Halibut are taken on the offshore banks.

Local hazards
This is exposed Pacific coast: ocean swell reaches the entrance year-round and steepens over the banks and shallower ground. Fog is frequent through the summer and can close in quickly. Navigation among the Broken Group requires careful chart work - there are many rocks and reefs, not all marked. Conditions at the entrance can be far worse than inside the islands.
Tides, current and sea state
Swell, not just wind, governs whether the entrance is workable, and a calm sunny day can still carry a large swell from a distant storm. Tidal streams run through the passes between the islands. Inside the sound and up the inlet, conditions moderate substantially, so plan the exposed portion of any trip around the swell forecast rather than the wind alone.

Conditions above are for 48.950°N, 125.220°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Barkley Sound lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's West Coast Vancouver Island South marine forecast zone.
⚠ Gale warning in effect for West Coast Vancouver Island South, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
