Tofino fishing & marine conditions
Tofino sits on the exposed west coast of Vancouver Island at the edge of Clayoquot Sound, with the town on an inlet behind a network of islands and mudflats and the open Pacific just outside. It is a genuine ocean location with sheltered inside water immediately behind it.
What runs here, and when
Chinook and coho are the main summer and autumn species, with fish moving along the coast and holding on the offshore structure. Halibut are taken on the banks offshore, and the deeper ground holds bottom fish. The season on this coast is shaped by ocean conditions as much as by run timing.

Local hazards
The harbour entrance and the bar are the significant local hazard: Pacific swell breaks heavily over the shallower ground at the entrance, and an ebb running against a large swell produces dangerous, breaking water. Fog is frequent through the summer. Offshore there is no shelter and conditions can change rapidly. Inside, the channels are shallow and the mudflats extensive.
Tides, current and sea state
Swell governs access here more than wind does. A long-period ocean swell will break at the entrance on a windless day, and the state of the tide changes that dramatically - crossing on a flood or near slack is considerably safer than on a big ebb. Inside the sound, extensive drying flats mean the tide controls where a boat can go.

As of September 17, 2026, nine closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 24, among them Pacific Rim National Park, Ahousaht/Miller Channel and Browning Passage.. Salmon limits for the area: in 24, 124, chinook 2 per day; in 24, chum non retention, coho 2 per day, pink non retention, sockeye 4 per day; in 124, chum 2 per day, coho 2 per day, pink 4 per day, sockeye non retention.
