Bella Coola fishing & marine conditions
Bella Coola lies at the head of North Bentinck Arm, a long fjord reaching far inland from the central coast toward the Coast Mountains. It sits at the mouth of the Bella Coola River, deep inland from the open ocean, with steep mountain walls on both sides of the inlet.
What runs here, and when
The Bella Coola River system draws returns of chinook, coho and chum, with autumn the main season for the later species and summer for chinook. The inlet itself sees fish staging before moving upriver. Regulations around river mouths are frequently specific and change in-season.
Local hazards
Outflow winds are the defining hazard. Cold air draining off the interior plateau accelerates down the fjord and can produce strong, sustained winds along the length of the inlet with little local warning, particularly in cold weather - the geometry that makes this happen in Howe Sound applies here on a larger scale. River outflow carries debris and deadheads, especially during freshet. The area is remote with limited services.
Tides, current and sea state
The fjord is deep with steep sides and limited places to land, and it funnels wind along its axis so the fetch runs the full length of the inlet. Freshwater from the river sits over the salt near the head, affecting clarity. Tidal range is significant; currents in the inlet are modest compared with the rapids further south.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 52.375°N, 126.751°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 08937. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Regulations
Bella Coola lies in DFO Pacific Area 8. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 8 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of November 1, 2026, eight closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 8, among them Dean Channel, Koeye Inlet and Kwatna Bay. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 4 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye closed.
