Campbell River fishing & marine conditions
The Campbell River tide station sits in Discovery Passage on the east coast of Vancouver Island, in water dominated by tidal current rather than by tidal range. The channel here connects the Strait of Georgia with Johnstone Strait and carries a very large exchange twice a day.
What runs here, and when
The area supports a well-known chinook fishery through the summer, with the largest fish drawing the traditional Tyee Pool fishery near the river mouth in late summer. Pinks return in great numbers in odd-numbered years, and coho follow in autumn. Local rivers draw returns late in the season.
Local hazards
Seymour Narrows, immediately north, is among the fastest tidal passages in the world and is dangerous to small craft at anything other than slack water. Cape Mudge to the south produces steep, breaking seas when wind opposes the ebb out of Discovery Passage. Both hazards are current-driven and both are unforgiving of poor timing.
Tides, current and sea state
Height predictions at this station are far less useful than current predictions for planning anything here. Slack water at Seymour Narrows does not coincide with high or low water at Campbell River, and the difference is large enough to matter. Always plan from current tables for the specific passage you intend to use.

As of September 17, 2026, nine closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 13, among them Discovery Passage/Campbell River, Mitlenatch Island and Proposed Homayno Marine Refuge - Northern Portion. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 2 per day; coho 2 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.
