Quadra & Cortes Islands fishing & marine conditions
Quadra and Cortes Islands sit at the northern end of the Strait of Georgia, where the wide strait narrows into the passages leading to Johnstone Strait. The area is a maze of islands, channels and rapids, with sheltered inside water and strong tidal passages within short distances of each other.
What runs here, and when
Chinook are present through the summer, with the Discovery Passage area drawing fish on migration. Pinks return in huge numbers in odd-numbered years. Coho move through in autumn. The many channels and back-eddies concentrate bait, so fishing here follows current stage closely.

Local hazards
This area contains several serious tidal rapids. Seymour Narrows to the west runs at extreme speeds and must be transited at slack. Surge Narrows and the other passages between the islands also run hard with overfalls and whirlpools. These are not hazards to be managed by a powerful engine - they require correct timing. Cell coverage is patchy among the islands.
Tides, current and sea state
Current governs navigation throughout this area, and slack water windows in the rapids are short. Use current tables for the specific passage, not general tide heights, and build in margin: arriving late at a rapid can mean waiting hours for the next slack. The sheltered channels between the islands can be calm while the passages nearby are dangerous.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 50.080°N, 125.150°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Quadra & Cortes Islands lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.
No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
Tidal currents
Fishing Quadra & Cortes Islands is timed by the current, not the tide height. The pass that governs it is Seymour Narrows.
Seymour Narrows floods to the south and ebbs to the north, running to 14.5 knots. Slack on November 3: 00:34, 06:42, 13:15, 19:55.
Predictions for the pass itself, not the water around it. Slack shifts about 50 minutes later each day, so these times are wrong for any other date. The Tidal Currents panel above gives every turn with its maximum-flow speed; CHS is the source.
