📊 Historical Data

Bella Bella fishing & marine conditions

Bella Bella sits on Campbell Island in the heart of the central coast, among a maze of islands, channels and inlets on the Inside Passage. The surrounding water is largely sheltered from open ocean by the outer islands, though the exposed coast is not far to the west.

What runs here, and when

Chinook, coho and chum move through the central coast channels in season, with summer and autumn the main periods. Halibut are taken on the banks. Prawns are taken in the sheltered inlets, subject to seasonal openings and area closures. Local river systems draw returns in autumn.

Local hazards

Remoteness is the main consideration: services are limited, distances between communities are long, and assistance can be far away. Outflow winds drain from the mainland inlets in cold weather and can be strong. The outer coast to the west is exposed to full Pacific swell. Cell coverage is patchy to non-existent across much of the area.

Tides, current and sea state

The channels between the islands are generally sheltered, but they funnel wind along their axes and tidal streams run strongly through the narrower passages. Conditions on the outer coast are entirely different from the inside channels. Carry charts and a working VHF - this is not water in which to rely on a phone.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 52.162°N, 128.142°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 08976. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Bella Bella lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Central Coast from McInnes Island to Pine Island marine forecast zone.

⚠ Storm warning in effect for Central Coast from McInnes Island to Pine Island, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Bella Bella lies in DFO Pacific Area 7. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 7 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, nine closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 7, among them Bottleneck Inlet, Griffin Passage and Hauyet/Lama Passage. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 4 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye closed.

Read from the DFO Area 7 page, last updated 2026-11-01. See the full Area 7 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
