📊 Historical Data

Powell River fishing & marine conditions

Powell River lies on the Sunshine Coast facing Malaspina Strait, with Texada Island across the water and the Strait of Georgia beyond. The shoreline is comparatively steep-to, and the town sits at the seaward end of a system of inland lakes and inlets. Malaspina Strait is narrow enough that conditions in it are often quite different from the wider Strait of Georgia beyond Texada.

What runs here, and when

Chinook move along this coast on migration with summer the main season, and coho follow in autumn. Prawn and crab are taken in the surrounding water and nearby inlets, subject to the seasonal openings and area closures that change through the year.

Local hazards

Malaspina Strait funnels wind along its axis, and a south-easterly can build a steep sea in the constricted channel between the mainland and Texada. Wind against tide in the strait produces short, uncomfortable water. Deadheads and drifting logs are a hazard in an area with a long history of log handling.

Tides, current and sea state

Tidal streams run along Malaspina Strait and are moderate compared with the rapids further north, but they are enough to build a chop when opposed by wind. The strait's geometry means conditions can be worse than the general Georgia Strait forecast suggests, particularly in a south-easterly.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 49.835°N, 124.524°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 07880. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Powell River lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.

No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Powell River lies in DFO Pacific Area 15. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 15 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, four closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 15, among them Strait of Georgia Dive Closures, Mitlenatch Island and Tidal Waters in Area 15. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 2 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.

Read from the DFO Area 15 page, last updated 2026-10-27. See the full Area 15 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
