Pender Harbour fishing & marine conditions
Pender Harbour is a cluster of sheltered coves and inlets on the Sunshine Coast near the entrance to Jervis Inlet. It is well protected from open water and serves as a natural base for the fjords to the north-east, with the exposed Malaspina Strait a short distance outside.
What runs here, and when
Chinook and coho move along the outer coast and past the harbour entrance in season, with summer and autumn the main periods respectively. The nearby inlets are known for prawns, subject to seasonal openings and area closures. Crab is taken in the sheltered water. The surrounding fjords are deep and cold, which gives them a different seasonal rhythm from the shallower water of the strait outside.
Local hazards
The harbour entrance is narrow with rocks and reefs on the approaches, requiring attention to the chart. Malaspina Strait outside funnels wind along its axis and can be considerably rougher than the harbour suggests. Jervis Inlet to the north-east is subject to strong outflow winds draining from the mountains in cold weather.
Tides, current and sea state
Inside the harbour, conditions stay calm in most weather, which makes it a poor guide to the strait outside. Tidal currents at the entrance are modest, but the transition to exposed water happens quickly once clear of the shelter. Check the Georgia Strait forecast rather than judging from the harbour.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 49.628°N, 124.029°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 07837. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Pender Harbour lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.
No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
Regulations
Pender Harbour lies in DFO Pacific Area 16. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 16 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of November 3, 2026, three closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 16, Gunboat Bay, Pender Harbour Recreational Crab Gear Restriction Area and Coastwide. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 2 per day in 16-1 to 16-4 and 16-6 to 16-22, 4 per day in 16-5; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.
