Sooke to Otter Point fishing & marine conditions
The stretch from Sooke west to Otter Point is the most heavily fished section of the eastern Juan de Fuca Strait, and the first place where the shelter of the inner coast genuinely runs out. The shoreline is rocky and steep-to, with banks and pinnacles close in. It offers reasonable protection in an easterly and almost none in a summer westerly.
What runs here, and when
This is prime chinook water through the summer, with fish moving along the shoreline structure rather than holding in one spot. Coho arrive later, generally from late summer onward, and can be found closer to the surface. Halibut are taken on the deeper ground offshore. Bait concentrations move constantly, so the productive depth and distance from shore change week to week.

Local hazards
Tide rips form off the points here - Otter Point and Beechey Head are the well-known ones - and stand up sharply when wind opposes the tidal stream. The afternoon westerly is the defining local hazard: it builds most summer days and can turn a comfortable morning into an uncomfortable run back east. Fog is common in summer and can arrive while the water is still flat.
Tides, current and sea state
Tidal streams accelerate around the headlands and create the rips that hold bait and fish, which is exactly why the water is worth fishing and why it demands respect. The safest routine is an early start and an early finish, off the water before the westerly fills in. Watch the sea state at the points rather than in the bays - the bays stay deceptively calm.
