Clayoquot Sound fishing & marine conditions
Clayoquot Sound is a large, deeply indented sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, with long inlets reaching inland between mountains and a scatter of islands buffering the open Pacific. It combines genuinely exposed outer water with sheltered inlets that feel entirely different.
What runs here, and when
Chinook and coho move along the outer coast and into the sound in summer and autumn. The inlets draw returns to local systems later in the season. Halibut are taken on the offshore banks. Prawns are taken in the sheltered inlets, subject to seasonal openings and area closures.

Local hazards
The outer sound is exposed to full Pacific swell, which breaks over the shallower ground and at the entrances. Fog is common in summer. The inlets are subject to strong outflow winds draining from the mountains in cold weather, which can arrive with little local warning. The area is remote in parts, with patchy cell coverage and long distances between shelter.
Tides, current and sea state
Conditions vary enormously between the outer coast and the inner inlets, and a forecast that suits one may be wrong for the other. Swell dictates the outer water; funnelled and outflow winds dictate the inlets. Tidal streams run through the passages between the islands and can oppose swell at the entrances.

Conditions above are for 49.220°N, 126.050°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Clayoquot Sound lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's West Coast Vancouver Island South marine forecast zone.
⚠ Gale warning in effect for West Coast Vancouver Island South, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
