📊 Historical Data

Texada Island fishing & marine conditions

Texada Island is a long, narrow island lying in the Strait of Georgia off the Sunshine Coast, separating Malaspina Strait on its north-east side from the open strait to the south-west. Its two sides have quite different characters: Malaspina Strait is comparatively sheltered, while the outer shore faces the full width of Georgia Strait.

What runs here, and when

Chinook move along the island on migration and hold near the points and drop-offs, with summer the main season. Coho move through in autumn. Prawn and crab are taken in the sheltered water, subject to seasonal openings and area closures.

Texada Island salmon fishing — runs, limits & season

Local hazards

The exposed south-western shore faces a long fetch across Georgia Strait and builds a serious sea in a strong south-easterly, with limited shelter along much of its length. Malaspina Strait funnels wind along its axis and can be rougher than its width suggests. The island is long, so rounding it in deteriorating weather commits you to a lengthy run.

Tides, current and sea state

The two sides of the island need to be treated as separate bodies of water. Tidal streams run along Malaspina Strait and can oppose a funnelled wind to produce a short chop. Check the Georgia Strait forecast for the outer shore and be conservative about committing to the exposed side late in the day.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 49.720°N, 124.520°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Texada Island lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.

No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Texada Island lies in DFO Pacific Area 15. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 15 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, four closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 15, among them Strait of Georgia Dive Closures, Mitlenatch Island and Tidal Waters in Area 15. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 2 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.

Read from the DFO Area 15 page, last updated 2026-10-27. See the full Area 15 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
