📊 Historical Data

Comox fishing & marine conditions

Comox sits on the east coast of Vancouver Island at the northern end of the Strait of Georgia, behind the shelter of Denman and Hornby Islands. The harbour is protected, with a shallow bar across its entrance, and Baynes Sound to the south is shallow, sheltered water known for shellfish culture.

What runs here, and when

Chinook and coho move through the area in season, with the Puntledge system drawing returns to the Courtenay River estuary in autumn. Pinks return in odd-numbered years. Crab and prawn are taken in the sheltered water, subject to seasonal openings and to shellfish closures that apply in parts of Baynes Sound.

Local hazards

The Comox bar across the harbour entrance is shallow and the channel through it must be followed - grounding here is the common local mistake, and the bar can break in a strong wind against an ebb. Georgia Strait outside the shelter of the islands can build a substantial sea in a south-easterly. Aquaculture gear is present in parts of Baynes Sound.

Tides, current and sea state

The harbour and Baynes Sound are shallow enough that the state of the tide governs access, particularly across the bar. Outside, the strait is open with a long fetch to the south-east. The contrast between the very sheltered inside water and the exposed strait is the thing to plan around, since the inside gives no indication of conditions outside.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 49.675°N, 124.901°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 07965. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Comox lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Strait of Georgia marine forecast zone.

No marine warnings are in effect for this zone.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Comox lies in DFO Pacific Area 14. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 14 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, five closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 14, among them Southeasterly Shoreline of Hornby Island (2), Mitlenatch Island and Area 14 - River Mouth Closures. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day in 14-1 to 14-13 and 14-15, non retention in 14-14; chum 4 per day; coho 2 per day in 14-1 to 14-10, 14-12, 14-13 and 14-15, 4 per day in 14-11, 14-14; pink 4 per day; sockeye non retention.

Read from the DFO Area 14 page, last updated 2026-10-25. See the full Area 14 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
