📊 Historical Data

Queen Charlotte fishing & marine conditions

Daajing Giids, formerly Queen Charlotte, sits on Skidegate Inlet on the south coast of Graham Island, in the channel separating Graham from Moresby Island. It is comparatively sheltered compared with the exposed coasts of Haida Gwaii, and serves as a main service centre for the islands. Skidegate Inlet connects the sheltered channel between the islands with Hecate Strait to the east, so conditions change quickly as you move seaward.

What runs here, and when

Chinook and coho move through the waters around the islands in season, with summer and autumn the respective peaks. Halibut are taken on the surrounding banks. Local systems draw returns in autumn. The fishery here is shaped by migrations past the islands and by the weather windows that allow access to the outer water.

Local hazards

Hecate Strait, immediately east, is shallow for its width and builds steep, breaking seas quickly in a strong wind - it has a serious reputation and deserves it. Skidegate Inlet itself carries tidal current and has shallow areas requiring chart attention. The islands are remote, with limited services and long distances to assistance.

Tides, current and sea state

Tidal streams run through Skidegate Inlet and the channel between the islands. The larger consideration is Hecate Strait: check its forecast specifically before committing to any crossing, and treat a wind warning as decisive rather than advisory. Weather windows on this coast can be short.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 53.254°N, 132.073°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service station 09850. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Queen Charlotte lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Hecate Strait marine forecast zone.

⚠ Storm warning in effect for Hecate Strait - northern half and southern half, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Queen Charlotte lies in DFO Pacific Area 2. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 2 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, eight closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 2, among them Coastwide, Gwaii Haanas - Burnaby Narrows and Gwaii Haanas - Cape Saint James. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 4 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye 4 per day.

Read from the DFO Area 2 page, last updated 2026-11-01. See the full Area 2 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
