📊 Historical Data

Moresby Island fishing & marine conditions

Moresby Island forms the southern half of Haida Gwaii, a long, mountainous and largely undeveloped island with a deeply indented west coast and the waters of Hecate Strait to the east. Much of the southern portion lies within a protected area, and the whole island is remote.

What runs here, and when

Chinook and coho move through these waters in season, and halibut are taken on the surrounding banks. The fishery follows the migrations past the islands rather than resident stocks, and the season is shaped heavily by weather windows. Because the island is largely undeveloped, fishing here is expedition rather than day-trip work, and trips are usually planned around multi-day weather windows.

Local hazards

Remoteness is the defining hazard: distances are long, services are minimal, and assistance can be many hours away. The west coast is fully exposed to Pacific swell with few safe harbours. Hecate Strait to the east builds steep, breaking seas because of its shallowness. Protected-area regulations apply in parts of the island and access may require permits.

Tides, current and sea state

Conditions differ substantially between the exposed west coast and the Hecate Strait side, and neither is forgiving. Swell governs the west; short, steep wind seas govern the east. Weather windows can be brief, and this is not water in which to be committed to a fixed schedule.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 52.820°N, 131.620°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Moresby Island lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Hecate Strait marine forecast zone.

⚠ Storm warning in effect for Hecate Strait - northern half and southern half, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Moresby Island lies in DFO Pacific Area 2. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 2 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, eight closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 2, among them Coastwide, Gwaii Haanas - Burnaby Narrows and Gwaii Haanas - Cape Saint James. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 4 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye 4 per day.

Read from the DFO Area 2 page, last updated 2026-11-01. See the full Area 2 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
