Graham Island East fishing & marine conditions
The east coast of Graham Island faces Hecate Strait, the shallow body of water separating Haida Gwaii from the mainland. The shoreline here is long and comparatively low, with extensive beaches, and it is fully exposed to whatever Hecate Strait produces.
What runs here, and when
Chinook and coho move along this coast in season, with summer and autumn the respective peaks. Halibut are taken on the surrounding banks. The east coast sees different conditions from the exposed west and north of the islands, though it is far from sheltered.

Local hazards
Hecate Strait is the hazard, and it has a serious reputation. It is shallow relative to its width, which causes seas to build steeply and break in a way that deeper water does not - conditions can become dangerous quickly in a strong wind, and the wave period is short and punishing. There is little shelter along much of this coast, services are limited, and distances are long.
Tides, current and sea state
The shallowness of Hecate Strait is the key fact: for a given wind, the sea state here is worse than in deeper water, and it deteriorates faster. Watch the forecast for Hecate Strait specifically and treat a strong wind warning as decisive. Tidal streams run along the coast and add to the sea state when opposing the wind.

Conditions above are for 53.620°N, 132.120°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Graham Island East lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Hecate Strait marine forecast zone.
⚠ Storm warning in effect for Hecate Strait - northern half and southern half, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
