Langara Island fishing & marine conditions
Langara Island sits off the north-western tip of Graham Island, at the far north-west corner of Haida Gwaii, where Dixon Entrance meets the open Pacific. It is one of the most remote and most exposed fishing locations in British Columbia, and it is famous precisely because migrating fish pass close to shore here.
What runs here, and when
Langara is best known for large chinook, which move past the island in numbers from late spring through the summer - this is the classic early-season destination fishery on the coast. Coho follow later in the summer and into autumn. Halibut are taken on the surrounding banks. The season is short and weather-dependent.

Local hazards
Exposure is extreme. The island faces the open Pacific and Dixon Entrance with no shelter to the north or west, and weather can deteriorate very quickly. Swell is a constant. The area is genuinely remote, with limited services and long distances to assistance, so self-sufficiency and a working VHF matter more here than anywhere on the inside coast.
Tides, current and sea state
Ocean swell wraps around the island and steepens over the shallower ground and reefs close to shore, which is exactly where the fishing happens. Tidal streams run strongly around the points. Weather windows can be short, and a plan that depends on a specific day is a poor plan here - build in flexibility.
Live data on this page
Conditions above are for 54.250°N, 133.050°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.
Marine forecast & warnings
Langara Island lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Dixon Entrance West marine forecast zone.
⚠ Gale warning in effect for Dixon Entrance West - east of Langara, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.
⚠ Storm warning in effect for Dixon Entrance West - west of Langara, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.
ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.
Regulations
Langara Island lies in DFO Pacific Area 1. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 1 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of November 1, 2026, two closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 1, Coastwide and G̱aw Ḵáahlii (Masset Inlet) Marine Refuge. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 4 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye 4 per day.
Read from the DFO Area 1 page, last updated 2026-11-01. See the full Area 1 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
