Masset fishing & marine conditions
Masset sits on the north coast of Graham Island in Haida Gwaii, on Masset Inlet near its opening onto Dixon Entrance. The inlet behind is sheltered, while the water outside the entrance is fully exposed to Dixon Entrance and the open Pacific beyond.
What runs here, and when
The north end of Haida Gwaii sees chinook move past from late spring through summer, with coho following later in the season. Halibut are taken on the banks offshore. Local systems draw returns in autumn. As elsewhere on these islands, the fishery follows migrating fish rather than resident stocks. Masset Inlet behind the entrance is a large, sheltered body of water with a character quite unlike the exposed coast outside.
Local hazards
The entrance to Masset Inlet has a bar, and it breaks in a swell - crossing it in poor conditions or against an ebb is the significant local hazard. Dixon Entrance outside is fully exposed with no shelter. Weather can deteriorate quickly, services are limited, and distances to assistance are long.
Tides, current and sea state
The bar at the inlet entrance is governed by the combination of swell and tide state: an ebb running against an ocean swell produces the worst conditions, and crossing on a flood or near slack is considerably safer. Inside the inlet, conditions are sheltered and give little indication of what is happening outside.

Tidal currents
Fishing Masset is timed by the current, not the tide height. The pass that governs it is Masset Channel.
Masset Channel floods to the south-southeast and ebbs to the north-northwest, running to 4.8 knots. Slack on September 17: 04:20, 10:05, 15:19, 21:27.
Predictions for the pass itself, not the water around it. Slack shifts about 50 minutes later each day, so these times are wrong for any other date. The Tidal Currents panel above gives every turn with its maximum-flow speed; CHS is the source.

Masset lies in DFO Pacific Area 1. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 1 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.
As of September 17, 2026, two closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 1, Coastwide and G̱aw Ḵáahlii (Masset Inlet) Marine Refuge. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 4 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye 4 per day.
