📊 Historical Data

Naden Harbour fishing & marine conditions

Naden Harbour is a large, sheltered harbour on the north coast of Graham Island in Haida Gwaii, opening onto Dixon Entrance. It offers genuine protection in an otherwise very exposed part of the coast, which is why it has long served as a base for fishing on the north end of the islands.

What runs here, and when

The north end of Haida Gwaii sees large chinook move past from late spring through summer, with coho following later in the season. Halibut are taken on the surrounding banks. As at Langara nearby, the fishery is driven by migrating fish passing close to the islands rather than by resident stocks.

Local hazards

Outside the harbour, Dixon Entrance is fully exposed to the open Pacific and to weather from the north and west, and it can build a serious sea quickly. The area is remote with limited services and long distances to assistance. Fog occurs, and weather windows can close rapidly.

Tides, current and sea state

The harbour itself is sheltered and gives little indication of conditions outside. Swell and wind in Dixon Entrance govern whether the outside water is workable. Tidal streams run around the headlands and over the banks where the fishing happens, and they can oppose swell to produce steep water.

Live data on this page

Conditions above are for 54.170°N, 132.950°W. Wind, wave and pressure data come from Open-Meteo and refresh every three hours; tide predictions come from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. The fishing score combines wind, wave height, barometric trend, moon phase, tide movement and time of day.

Marine forecast & warnings

Naden Harbour lies in Environment and Climate Change Canada's Dixon Entrance West marine forecast zone.

⚠ Gale warning in effect for Dixon Entrance West - east of Langara, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.

⚠ Storm warning in effect for Dixon Entrance West - west of Langara, issued Sunday November 01, 2026 at 04:00 PCT.

ECCC reissues the forecast through the day and can post a warning at any hour, so the Marine Forecast panel above carries the current wind, visibility and multi-day outlook word for word. It describes the open water of the zone, not a particular bay inside it, and is no substitute for the VHF or weatheradio broadcast.

Regulations

Naden Harbour lies in DFO Pacific Area 1. Openings, closures and limits change in-season and differ between subareas, so check the DFO Area 1 recreational fishing page before you go. Nothing on this page is a substitute for the current regulations, official charts, or the marine forecast.

As of November 1, 2026, two closure areas are in effect in DFO Pacific Area 1, Coastwide and G̱aw Ḵáahlii (Masset Inlet) Marine Refuge. Salmon limits for the area: chinook 2 per day; chum 4 per day; coho 4 per day; pink 4 per day; sockeye 4 per day.

Read from the DFO Area 1 page, last updated 2026-11-01. See the full Area 1 regulations for every closure and limits table, or the Fishery Notices for changes newer than that date.
